Can you be able to calculate the lighting costs for Metal Halide fixtures ? The only way to see how much energy your facility uses , is by calculating the lighting costs for Metal Halide fixtures. This helps you to save a lot of energy which is not reflected in your electricity bill.

Basically, by making these calculations your able to make educated decisions when it comes to upgrading to products that are energy efficient. Below are some of the basic steps that will help you when it comes to calculating the lighting costs for Metal Halide fixtures.

1 .Determine The Type Of Fixture You’re Using
You should be aware of the type of Metal Halide fixture that you’re using before you start any calculations.

2. Determine the size
Determining the size of your Metal Halide is also very important. You determine the size by knowing the wattage of the metal fixture. You can have 250 Watt MH, 175 Watt MH, 1000 Watt MH or 400 Watt MH. You can know the size of your fixture by checking the supply room shelf, where you are likely to find a replacement bulb . You can also ask a maintenance staff who has vast knowledge on the metal fixtures.

If you want to be exact when doing your calculations, you should hire an electric contractor to help you know the size or shape of your metal fixture. You can also use a ladder to climb up and get the number of your fixture. It is worth noting that these fixtures heat up to over 900 degrees and should therefore be left to cool down.

3 .Determine The Quantity Of Your Fixture
Count your fixtures so that you can get a rough number that will help you when doing calculations. You should try to get an exact count so that you can get a rebate amount. You need a workable quantity that you can use in your calculations.

4. Determine The Actual Wattage
Just because the wattage of your Metal Halide is 175 Watt, doesn’t mean that it is the actual wattage of the fixture. The actual wattage of a 175 Watt Metal Halide is 205, that of a 250 Watt fixture is 290, a 400 Watt fixture has 458 Actual Watts and a 1000 Metal Halide Fixture has 1,081 Actual Watts.

5. Multiply The Quantity By The Actual Wattage
This calculation is very simple to do and is not complicated . Basically, if you have a 1000 Watt Metal Halide, you take 1,081 watts and multiply by the number of fixtures . If you have 100 fixtures , take 100 fixtures and multiply by 1,081 Watts to get 108,100. This is the Watts of the total system.

6. Compare The Proposed Total Watts With The Existing Total Watts
Before you get an energy efficient upgrade, you should compare the proposed total Watts with the existing total Watts so that you can see the difference. An example of this comparison is when you replace a 1000 Watt Metal Halide with a
250 Watt LED high bay fixture. How do you compare? Take 100 new fixtures and multiply by 265 Watts to get 26,500 ; which is the total Watts of the system.

7. Try To Compare The Old And New
By comparing the old and new total Watts of the system , you’re able to tell how much energy you save. If your old total Watts of the system is 108,100 and the new total Watts of the system is 26,500, you learn that the reduction in Wattage of the new system is approximately 81,600 Watts. You have therefore reduced the wattage of the total system by 80%. At first , it may seem unbelievable but calculations actually show that you save 80% of the energy you previously used.

Metal Halides are very common; they have a very high maintenance cost especially when you add the cost of electricity. For this reason, you need the calculations above to help you reduce your cost of maintenance.

It costs a lot of money to operate Metal Halides and can sometimes be considered as a bad option to use when it comes to lighting up your facility. However, with the calculations above, you don’t have to worry about the cost of maintenance and operation of Metal Halides.

These calculations are very important for you especially if you're trying to save some energy or reduce the cost of your electricity bill. Metal Halides can be very effective especially if you know how to save the power they consume. These calculations are very important and you should learn how to do them if you're using Metal Halides to light up your facility, home or workplace.
